Hi! I am Meghanad Ganpule, a fine art photographer whose work has always been intimate and evocative. An award-winning portrait artist who studied at the JJ School of Art, I have transitioned to using the camera as my brush. My approach to capturing life is gentle and subtle, with a particular focus on black-and-white portraits of flowers. I strive to paint with light, imbuing my subjects with a soft luminosity that gives them character and personality. My minimalist approach is enhanced by a love for geometry, leading to a deliberate arrangement of shapes that allude to the unification and balance of mathematics. Working with a Hasselblad 6 x 6 camera, I prefer a square format. For me, flowers are not just beautiful objects but vehicles to convey human emotions. My first solo exhibition, “Paintings by Light” (2004) at the Piramal Gallery, NCPA, was well received, and I have since participated in two group exhibitions.

“Inside Out” showcases a completely different body of work. Here, I step back from classical black-and-white frames and minimalist portraits of flowers to focus on the bustling city of Mumbai. Like a documentary photographer, I capture gritty images of everyday life, stripping my frames of artistic poise. Even in these scenes, I look for geometry in form and find playful humor in mundane situations. In other frames, I create narratives between urban signboards and people, coaxing out hidden stories from their simple juxtaposition.

I look forward to presenting a pithier, witty body of work in the coming years.
